Web Proxy V/S VPN Service? Which One is Better?

Since the FCC internet protection policy has been repealed by the authorities of the U.S government, internet users are left with no choice but to adopt certain technical measures that can help them stay safe on the internet. Repealing of FCC internet protection policy means that now your internet service providers, commonly referred to as ISPs, will be allowed to collect, monitor, share, and sell your private information to the marketing agencies, government, or any other surveillance without your consent. Your private information such as credit card details, personal information, and other sensitive data will now be in hands of the ISPs that can sell your information to earn large chunks of money.

The only way to protect your private information and to stay protected on the internet is using technical measures such as a web proxy and a VPN service. These tools can help our private data stay safe and secure without anyone monitoring it. Let us explain in detail what a web proxy and a VPN service is.

Proxy

A web proxy is a web-filter that acts as an intermediary between your internet connection and your electronic device (mobile phone, computer, etc.) It is completely web-browser based, which means that it will only work on a web browser such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc. When the internet traffic will pass from this web-filter, it will appear to come from its IP address and not from your ISP.  As the name indicates, the proxy server will only be able to secure the internet traffic through a web-browser with its proxy settings. The web proxy will hide your IP address and your internet traffic from your IP. Moreover, it gives you access to the blocked content available on the internet. Keep in mind that a web proxy does not keep you fully secure on the internet as all the internet traffic that is passed between you and the website is not encrypted and can be accessed by the online hackers at any time. Furthermore, it also does not offer any additional benefits when you’re using different apps and desktop clients. Nevertheless, it still can be considered a good tool to gain access to the blocked content.

VPN Service

Since internet users realized that a proxy could not provide them with many benefits, they moved on to try a VPN service for better online protection. A VPN acts as a secure tunnel between your electronic device and your internet connection, encrypting all the internet traffic that is passed in between. It hides your location and IP address and makes you appear completely anonymous on the internet. No one can track or monitor your online activity or your web-browsing history, not even your ISP. All the internet traffic that is passed through this secure tunnel becomes encrypted and cannot be tracked by any online hacker because it is encrypted with secure VPN protocols. You can easily use a public Wi-Fi connection if you’re connected to the internet via a VPN server. When you’re connected to a VPN server, your ISP can only see that you’re connected to a VPN server but cannot monitor your online activity. Only your VPN provider can see your online activity. Therefore, you need to choose your VPN provider carefully. Also, make sure your VPN service does not keep logs of your information. Gaining access to the block content or streaming your favorite TV shows and movies on Netflix is also possible with the help of a VPN service.

Which One is Better?

We tested out both the tools, a web proxy as well as a VPN service, and concluded that a VPN service is far better than a web proxy because it encrypts the internet traffic, making it impossible for the online hackers to intercept it. Anyone could intercept your private data if you’re using a web proxy but with a VPN service, no one, not even your ISP can intercept your private data or track your online activity. If we analyze both the tools in terms of speed, a VPN service works quite fast and delivers a speedy performance whereas a proxy is usually slow due to its crowded and over trafficked servers. We are already aware that both of these tools allow us to access blocked content and can circumvent geo-restrictions but a proxy can only do the basic work and is not 100% reliable. On the other hand, a VPN successfully can unblock all the geo-restrictions. As mentioned earlier, a proxy is browser-based and only works with a web browser but a VPN can work on any platform. Most of the web proxies are available for free whereas VPNs have both free and paid options. The paid VPN options are considered more reliable than the free ones. Therefore, choosing a VPN over a proxy would be your best option.
